Synopsis: What media art mediation strategies are practiced in Korea, Japan, and Indonesia? What are pressing issues for media art mediation regarding different local contexts?
“Mediating Media Arts” is an ongoing research project by Fanny Kranz and Barbara Zoé Kiolbassa. It researches art education practices related to media art with the aim of fostering an international exchange between media art educators in Japan, Korea, Germany, and Indonesia. By practicing Kaiwa (Japanese, dialogue), this session will journey through the project’s travelogue, tasting of Kimchi (Korean fermented dish) and Ketoprak (Indonesian street food).

Speakers:

  • Barbara Zoé Kiolbassa is a researcher, art mediator, and curator with a passion for community based practices between art, media, and ecology. She is currently on a research trip in Korea, Japan, Indonesia and Vietnam, exploring art education practices in relation to media arts. Her research project “Mediating Media Arts”, led together with Fanny Kranz, is funded by the Goethe Institute and UNESCO City of Media Arts Karlsruhe. Before setting out on her research trip, she worked as a Curator of Education at the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Germany, as well as Digital Coordinator at documenta fifteen in Kassel, Germany;
  • Fanny Kranz works as an art educator and designer for various cultural institutions and loves interdisciplinary projects between the kitchen table, exhibition space and public space. She currently teaches and researches in the field of Visual Arts and Digital Design & Fabrication at the Faculty of Architecture at KIT Karlsruhe, Germany.
