LASALLE X LTA: Curating Art in Transit for Geological Education
Context and problems
The Art in Transit (AIT) programme is Singapore's largest public art showcase. Under the AIT programme, local artists are commissioned to create original artworks for MRT stations, providing an opportunity for the artists to celebrate Singapore’s local history and community. These become a permanent source of delight for the millions of commuters who travel daily on the rail network.
The proposed project will challenge LASALLE group of students to develop a Curatorial Portfolio for LTA that outlines a process for selecting and commissioning an artist to create a permanent public artwork that educates the local community about the geological history, unique soil profile, and rubber plantation of a specific geolocation in Singapore. Students should be guided by the following key consideration in designing a Curatorial Portfolio:
Artist Expertise: Identify artists with a demonstrated ability to create public art that is both visually appealing and conceptually meaningful;
Community Relevance: Select artists who are familiar with the local context and can effectively communicate the geological history and cultural heritage of the area;
Technical Integration: Ensure that the artist has the skills and experience to incorporate technical geological data into the artwork in a creative and meaningful way, and
Sustainability: Consider the environmental impact of the artwork and prioritize artists who are committed to sustainable practices.
Project Vision and Expected Outcomes
The project aims to engage students in hands-on experiences in the design, development, and implementation of a project in close collaboration with LTA. It challenges students to address existing tasks that LTA: Art in Transit is currently facing to design an innovative solution that can enhance organizational development.
