Jonathan Liu

Jonathan Liu is a Visual Artist and Adjunct Lecturer at LASALLE College of the Arts, where he lectures across the Design Communication, Fine Arts, and Arts Management faculties. His artistic practice explores how the process of recollection deteriorates, decays, and disappears over time. Touching on concepts of post-memory, his work examines the evolving relationship between the human and nonhuman, seeking to dissolve and entangle the boundaries between objective photographic forms and subjective experiences. By experimenting with machine learning alongside traditional photographic and darkroom processes, he questions photography's materiality and its relationship with technology. Through the representation and fragmentation of the landscape, his practice presents the fallibility of recollection and addresses the need for deceleration in art-making within a hyper-accelerated era of technological immediacy, all while searching for the romantic sublime.

Alongside his visual arts practice, he has 15 years of industry experience as a freelance photographer, combined with roles on the exhibitions and productions team at the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore (NTUCCA) and as a researcher for the London-based British Journal of Photography. He was also a Creative Producer with SERIAL Communications, managing a cross-disciplinary team of creatives and technologists on blockchain and metaverse-specific projects. His curatorial experience includes co-curating and producing exhibitions in Singapore, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates. Driven by an interest in decentralized radical ecosystems, he is a founding member of NFT Asia, an artist-led non-profit digital collective aimed at uplifting Asian artists within the Web 3.0 space. He has spoken widely on digital collectivism, leading workshops, seminars and talks at the National Gallery Singapore and during Singapore Art Week.

As a dissertation supervisor, Jonathan is capable of guiding students through both academic and practice-based research pathways, drawing on a broad range of interdisciplinary expertise. His research interests and supervisory scope encompass post-photography, expanded photographic practices, new media, generative AI, machine learning, AI anxiety, visual arts practice, photography and art book publishing, digital collectivism, blockchain technology, Web 3.0, NFTs, cryptocurrencies, the metaverse, gaming, exhibition production, curatorial and arts management.

His work has been exhibited internationally across the United Kingdom, Norway, the United Arab Emirates, China, Japan, and Singapore. He holds a BA (Hons) in Photography from London College of Communication, University of the Arts London, as well as an MA in Fine Arts from LASALLE College of the Arts, awarded by Goldsmiths, University of London. He is also the recipient of the postgraduate National Arts Council Arts Scholarship in 2023 and the recipient of the 45th International TAKIFUJI Art Award in 2024.
