Bringing Art to Life With Chikahiro Hanamura: Site-Specific Installation and Audience Engagement at LASALLE
Context and problems
Nota bene: For more comprehensive and contextual learning, students undertaking this project are strongly encouraged to enrol in the Gallery Management Elective to benefit from both a solid theoretical foundation and applied contextual implementation.
LASALLE College of the Arts is premiering a major site-specific landscape artwork across its campus green spaces and central courtyard, conceptualised by Japanese artist Prof Chikahiro Hanamura to commemorate the official launch of the new MA Programme in Cultural Analytics and AI under the UNESCO Chair scheduled for March 12, 2027. Organised in close partnership with the Culture Futures Lab, this high-profile event will host distinguished VIPs, including global delegations from UNESCO. Central to the work is an active audience engagement component; working closely with the artist, students will design participatory mechanisms and curate the spatial journey to create a memorable, stimulating, and productive experience for attendees. The preliminary concept proposal for the installation remains under active consideration and institutional approval, and is subject to revisions based on safety measures, risk assessments, and technical production limitations. The core organisational challenge lies in delivering and documenting this interactive, technologically intricate environment while navigating strict safety protocols, crowd flow dynamics, technical constraints, and high-level event management. Collaborating across disciplines with the Diploma in Theatre Production and Management and the LASALLE Production team, students will have to liaise with the technical production team, ensure a smooth logistics and event management, design and deliver marketing and promotional campaign, set up experiences for the VIP guests within a live campus space and document the performance.
Project Deliverables and Outputs
The final deliverable is an end-to-end Event Delivery, Staging Operations, and Media Documentation Package comprising three key components:
- Logistics & Event Operations Plan: End-to-end event management roadmaps outlining load-in schedules, crowd flow management, safety protocols, and contingency measures across the campus grounds.
- Marketing & Promotional Campaign: A comprehensive outreach campaign featuring promotional collateral, social media rollouts, and digital content to build visibility across LASALLE, academic networks, and media platforms.
- VIP Guest Experience Protocol: Tailored hospitality and experiential frameworks designed specifically for incoming UNESCO delegations and campus VIPs within the live campus environment.
- Professional Event Documentation Video (approx. 2 minutes): A high-definition, creatively edited video capturing the installation setup, the event opening, audience engagement, and final live show, delivered for publication on the LASALLE and Culture Futures Lab websites.
